Ἀπὸ μηχανῆς θεός — “a god from the machine.”

In Greek tragedy the phrase named something built, not just written: the mechane, a wooden crane and pulley system that could lower an actor playing a god onto the stage, or raise one through a trap in the floor — arriving, quite literally, out of the sky.

Aeschylus is credited with its first use, in The Eumenides, but it was Euripides who returned to it again and again: more than half of his surviving tragedies end this way, a god descending to settle what the mortals on stage could not resolve themselves.

Aristotle disapproved. A play's resolution, he wrote in the Poetics, should grow out of the plot itself, never descend into it from outside. The criticism outlived the cranes — and so did the phrase, which has named, ever since, the moment an impossible situation is resolved not by what came before it, but by what arrives from elsewhere.
